SPV Racing have launched their 2016 Ligier LMP3 programme at the Ascari Race Resort. Sporting a striking new livery, SPV Racing also confirmed their driver line up, which will feature Borja Garcia and the newly signed Ashraff Dewal. The team’s programme for 2016 will begin at Round 5 of the 2016 VdeV Endurance Series at Mugello in September. From there, the team will enter the penultimate round of the 2016 European Le Mans Series at Spa-Francorchamps before shipping the car off to compete in the Asian Le Mans Series.
Former Toyota F1 test and reserve driver Borja Garcia will be team up with Malaysian driver Ashraff Dewal for the Asian Le Mans Series along with the two warm-up events in Mugello and Spa-Francorchamps. Garcia normally drives the SPV Racing #1 Ford sponsored Mustang in the NASCAR Whelen Euroseries, where he is currently sitting third in the Elite One category.
Ashraff Dewal has successfully competed in Single Seaters, Sprint and Endurance races in Asia. Having raced an Audi R8 for the past three seasons, Dewal is now making the step up to LMP3 for 2016. Ashraff also became the first Malaysian driver to complete a NASCAR test, when he ran the SPV Racing #69 Ford Mustang at the Ascari Race Resort on May 28th.
With their first Ligier JS P3 driver line-up almost complete, the team are now considering the option of fielding a second car for the Asian Le Mans Series, with a number of drivers expressing their interest in joining the team.
Lars GV Lindberg – Team Manager, SPV Racing:
“We are very happy that Ashraff Dewal decided to join SPV Racing for the Asian Le Mans Series, sharing SPV Racing’s target to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans by 2019. Ashraff is an experienced driver with a good track record that also brings the knowledge we need to run successfully in Asia. It’s great that our first car now has a really strong driver line-up, so we feel the time is right to consider adding a second car to our Asian Le Mans Series participation.”
Ashraff Dewal – Driver, SPV Racing:
“It has been a good experience coming to Europe and Ascari to prepare for the Asian Le Mans Series. Ascari is a wonderful but challenging track and I’m very happy with the car handling and my own performance. Now I will be spending more time with the team and getting to know them and the Ligier LMP3 before we take on the Asian Le Mans quest. I look forward especially to race at Le Mans in the future to sample the famous LeMans spirit.”
Borja Garcia – Driver, SPV Racing:
“I love racing with the Ford Mustang in the NASCAR Whelen Euroseries and it is my and the teams ambition to win the series this year, but Endurance racing and the Ligier is rather different in many aspects. Here the key point is being able to work with the team to setup and maximize the overall team performance and I enjoy helping to achieve the team objectives.”
Raul Garcia – CEO & Technical Manager, SPV Racing
“We had a fantastic day at Ascari completing over 74 laps with five drivers setting good lap times with Borja Garcia, 1.59.22, but also completing long runs with good reliability. With the new Michelin S8 we have very good balance in the car with the understeer dialled out and still good durability.”
SPV Racing will begin their preparations for Mugello with a test at Barcelona on Thursday 25th August.
